This 13 year old that i'm talking about first popped up on a Nike ad. This person that I am talking about is named Olivia Moultrie. She's already became a pro at soccer. Olivia decided to not go to the University of North Carolina and instead, she agreed to be with Nike. She accepted the offer when she was only 11. Olivia's goal is to be a pro at soccer and be the best player in the world. The Nike deal that Olivia got was worth more than going to 4 years of college at UNC (University of North Carolina). She was actually the youngest soccer girl to accept a college scholarship. Sadly, right now Olivia is not allowed to play high school or club soccer. In the newspaper on February 25, Olivia was going to Portland to become a soccer player for the Thorns of the National Women's soccer League. But, apparently Olivia has to be at least 18 to play with them.
After reading this I think that the theme to this article was that young people can do most things that adults do too. Just because of Olivia's age that didn't stop her to keep on playing and practicing soccer. Most of us young kids can make differences too.

Months before Rosa Parks even protested in 1955, a young 15 year girl named Claudette Colvin stood up for segregation in Alabama. Claudette Colvin was born on September 5, 1939 in Montgomery Alabama. Claudette studied very at school. That must explain why she got mostly A's at school. She even wished that one day she could be president. One day on March 2, 1955 when Claudette was riding the bus the bus driver told her to give up a seat to a white lady. Just like what Rosa Parks did, Claudette refused to give up her seat. Well, she got arrested for doing that and she got pressed with several charges. But thankfully her church minister paid her bail and she got out of jail. It's kind of upsetting how Claudette got little attention for what she did months before what Rosa Parks did.
Have you ever heard a saying that "an elephant never forgets"? Well I have never heard of it before until I read this article! Older female matriarchs (elephants) usually lead herds. Overtime they build a really strong memory so that they can remember their friends and enemies. They can remember a bunch of things like the place the herd found their food and water. The elephants good memory is a big part of how they survive. Scientists actually believe that the reason why elephants have such good memory is because of their big brain. An average adult elephant's brain weighs 11 pounds, but the weight of our brain is 3 pounds. Scientists also believe that elephants are as smart as dolphins and chimpanzees. I actually didn't think that elephants were that smart to remember their memories! That is pretty interesting.
I think we all know that dolphins are actually really smart! Instead of eating their food right away, they prepare their food just like us humans do, right? Did you know that male bottle nose dolphins also have a very unique whistle so that other bottle nose dolphins can recognize them. Their whistle is like a name. A marine biologist, Stephanie King and her team actually recorded about 17 different male bottle nose dolphins whistles. Just like how some people show their affection, bottle nose male dolphins like to show their bromance by slapping each other. I wonder if female bottle nose dolphins also have "names" to recognize each other.
This year mickey is 90 years years old! Can you believe that? It doesn't even seem like he is that old! Did you also know that Mickey was made in the 1900's. In honor of Mickey turning 90 years old there is a art exhibition that is 16,000 square feet! At the exhibition there is a steamboat that the original black and white mickey mouse used to drive. If you remember he also whistles a catchy tune while he is driving the steamboat and right now I have the tune stuck in my head! Maybe you would see that short clip of mickey driving that steamboat or before you watch a movie. I think in my whole entire life I have seen that clip at least 10 times. You can see all the amazing art and paintings of mickey in Manhattan, New York. I wish I can go see all the cool paintings and art structures of mickey. The art exhibition lasts November 8, 2018 to February 10, 2019.
There are a bunch of different types of cacti. There is about over 2,000 different types of cacti. Did you know that cacti is actually a word that means more than one cactus? You wouldn't say cactuses but you would say cacti. Pretty weird right? Of course we all should know that cactus grow in dry areas. Probably the most common cactus that you would think of is the saguaro cactus. You can find cactus in the southern tip of South America to western Canada. Well it was nice reading about cacti.
As all of us should know, Veteran's Day is celebrated on November 11 every year. Veteran's day is not just a random day to celebrate, it's a day when we thank our men and women that are part of the U.S army and more. Memorial day and Veteran's day get mixed up. Memorial day is actually a day when we honor our loved ones who where in the U.S army that passed away. When on the other hand Veteran's day is a day we honor our loved ones who are in the army that are STILL alive but you can also honor the loved ones that passed away. The US president Woodrow Wilson started the tradition on November 11 to honor the people who sacrificed their lives at World War 1. Back then Veteran's day was called Armistice day. Veteran's day is on November 11 because it was the day that the Allied Nations and Germany agreed on a ceasefire on November 11 . Well that was kind of cool to learn a little bit about Veteran's day.
After the Elephant and the Rhino, Hippos are the 3rd largest mammals. A hippos closest relative is actually a whale! That's a new fact I learned today. It makes since though because hippos spend most of their time in water and (well it's pretty obvious) whales live in water. So that's one common thing they have. Speaking of water, hippos spend about 16 or more hours in water and at night they go out in the fields so they can eat the grass and other plants. You know how hippos are really big? Well get this, male hippos can weigh up to 8,000 pounds! That's like 4 tons! That's a bunch. They can eat over 80 pounds of grass and plants, I weigh less than that! Hippos really surprise me. Maybe one day I can see a hippo.
